NextCloud user instructions
NexCloud can be accessed either trough its web interface at https://nc.beta-lorraine.fr or (strongly suggested!) using the NextCloud client for your OS.
- If you haven't already done, download the nextcloud client for your OS from here and install it. Note that the client is available also for mobiles.
- Configure an account using as username your surname, and as remote server use https://nc.beta-lorraine.fr
- Choose a folder to start sync your data. You can choose the same folder you sync with the old server on lef-nancy.org or choose a new folder if you want to start "clean" and perhaps put some order ;-)
- You can delete from the client the account related to the old server lef-nancy.org
If you forget your password, ask for a new one and check your mailbox for the recovery email. If you use the NextCloud client, remember to update it with the new password to keep sync working!
Office documents
Office documents use now Collabora Online, a fork of LibreOffice. Collaborative editing is fully supported, even on the mobile, and doesn't require any app.
Recall that while MS office documents are supported, the native format is the OpenDocument format (ODF).
Mobile usage
To access your files on mobile, aside then just using the browser, you can use the NextCloud app [Android - iPhone] and connect with your nextcloud account as above.
Additional mobile applications:
- in order to edit office documents you now don't need any other app: just use the NextCloud app.
- in order to use the videoconference service (Talk) download the NextCloud Talk app [Android] - iPhone]
Encryption
The server now supports End-to-End Encryption, with some caveats:
- you need to enable it using the NextCloud client (not on the web interface)
- you can't encrypt the root folder, only specific subfolders
- you can't share content in the encrypted folders
- Only the content on the cloud is encrypted, not those on your computer. If you want a solution to encrypt your super secrets both on the cloud and on your computer use somehting like cryptomator.
In order to be able to start encrypt a folder click on your NextCloud sync client after the sentence "This account supports end-to-end encryption, but it needs to be set up first."
You will receive a random 12 words. These keys can be shown to you later, from the same desktop client, but you need to store these keys somewhere safe in case that you lost access to the nextcloud client, you need to set syncronization on another computer or (see later) you want to access the encrypted folders from the web.
If you want access encrypted folders from the web interface, you need to "Enable E2EE navigation in the browser" from the web interface -> Profile -> Personal Settings -> Security -> End to end encryption.
Note that everytime you will want to access the encrypted folders from the web interface, you will need the 12 words provided to you from the desktop sync client and, as reported by NextCloud, this usage could break the security of your encrypted folders, because a malicious attacker could "read" your secret words during your session.
